Fuzz blitz lounge

We returned with Fuzz Blitz Lounge at JOVIAL on March 22 with a slightly different plan than last month.

This time, we focused heavily on space, lighting, the DJ, and chess on stage—and the result was fantastic!

The atmosphere turned magical with great music by Einar Bjørløw, our brand-new spotlights for beautiful lighting, and even more space, utilizing the entire second floor with a stage for chess games.

We thank everyone who participated and helped make the evening what it became.

The night’s big winner was Alexander Øye-Strømberg, who went undefeated in the tournament with 8 out of 8 wins – an incredibly strong performance by the FIDE Master, boasting a chess.com rating of 2600!

We also continued developing the concept around our DGT boards, which allow us to digitize chess and promote players and the game in a more creative way. We set up 2 DGT boards on each side of the stage showing games live on big screens that everyone could easily follow from multiple angles in the venue.

After the tournament, Alexander got to face off against Candidate Master (CM) Gaute Bergan, stepping in for Gunnar Lund, who couldn’t participate to defend “Mesterprøven.” However, the FIDE Master proved too strong for Gaute in what turned out to be more of a “Masters’ Duel” than a test. Tournament Winner:

Alexander Øye-Strømberg (8 out of 8 points)

Alexander dropped by with a friend to check out Fuzz Chess and spontaneously decided to join the tournament. That turned out to be a great decision—he impressed with 8 straight wins and took first place, including a strong victory in the honorary game “Mesterprøven.”

It quickly became clear that Alexander is a FIDE Master (FM), with a blitz rating of 2244 from FIDE and an impressive chess.com rating of 2600. Unfortunately, Gunnar Lund was unable to attend to defend the “Mesterprøven”—that match would no doubt have been intense.

Congratulations to Alexander on an outstanding debut, 800 NOK in prize money, and a warm welcome back to Fuzz Chess!

Best Female Player:

Merel Broek (4 out of 8 points)

Merel took part in her first ever Fuzz Chess event, and more importantly, her first chess tournament ever. She showed up with a good dose of excitement, but no specific expectations. That turned out to be the perfect approach—Merel impressed with 4 wins out of 8 possible games.

A brilliant debut was topped off with the Best Female Player award, receiving a chess clock which she absolutely loved.

Huge congrats, Merel—we look forward to seeing you again at the Fuzz Chess board!
